Abstract

Stable aqueous copolymer emulsions are made by dissolving acrylamide in an aqueous medium with a water-soluble inorganic peroxy polymerization catalyst, dissolving vinyl acetate in the aqueous medium and heating to copolymerize the monomers and form a stable emulsion of the copolymer, the proportion of acrylamide being in the range of from 3.5 to 10% by weight of the vinyl acetate and the sum of the monomers being between 30 and 60% of the total emulsion by weight. A third monomer, e.g. crotonic acid, may be present in an amount of between 3 and 10% by weight of the vinyl acetate. Catalysts specified are hydrogen peroxide and potassium persulphate, which latter may be used alone or in combination with sodium bisulphite or silver nitrate. The whole quantity of catalyst and vinyl acetate may be added to the reaction mixture at the start of polymerization, but preferably a portion is present initially and the remainder is added as the reaction proceeds. The polymerization medium may be emulsifier-free or contain an emulsifier such as stearamidopropyl - dimethyl - beta - hydroxyethyl ammonium dihydrogen phosphate or a sodium alkyl aryl sulphonate. The emulsions are used in the preparation of films which when dried at a temperature of 80-110 DEG C. are waterresistant. The terpolymers derived from crotonic acid are soluble in dilute alkali.
