Abstract
834,952. A.C. generators; supply systems. depending on two machines. GARDNER, L. F. (Unterreiner, J., Honauer, E., and Baer, E., [trading as Unterreiner & Co., J.]). Oct. 29, 1957, No. 33717/57. Classes 35 and 38 (4). A generator unit for supplying current of variable frequency to grinding spindle motors using four frequency ranges, comprises a variable-speed alternator A having two separate star-connected stator windings which may be connected in series or parallel, and a frequency doubling asynchronous generator C mounted on the same shaft, and arranged to be connected in circuit or not, at will. The generator is driven by a motor having stepless speed variation and its field winding 17 is constantly excited through resistor 21. Ganged switches a, b, c controlled by lever 46 serve to connect the generator output windings 1, 3, 5 and 2, 4, 6 in series or parallel to produce high or low voltage, and to connect the output directly, or through the frequency-doubler, to the output terminals 39, 40, 41. The frequency doubler, which is of the same pole-number as the alternator, is arranged not to alter the voltage. The four switch positions 1-4 of lever 46 correspond to connections to four separate grinder motors operating over successive speed ranges, speed control within each range being achieved by controlling the generator speed. For the lower part of the generator speed range its stator windings are connected in series, and for the upper part in parallel so that the voltages produced are similar. In addition, the frequency-doubler may be used or not, giving the four speed ranges. The machine may be two-phase.
