Abstract

834,841. Gas turbine engines. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. May 29, 1958 [May 29, 1957], No. 17110/57. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A warning system for indicating incorrect functioning of a combustion chamber of a gas turbine engine having a plurality of such chambers, comprises a plurality of pairs of dissimilar metals connected in an open-ended series, the junctions between the pairs being positioned so as to be subjected to the temperature issuing from different combustion chambers or groups of combustion chambers, the open ends of the series being connected in a circuit adapted to operate directly or indirectly a warning device, the junctions of the metals being so connected that should one junction be subjected to a temperature substantially different from the others, a current is induced in the circuit which causes the operation of the warning device. In the engine shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a plurality of thermocouples 13 is disposed in the jet pipe 12, each being disposed in line with a combustion chamber 11. The thermocouples are connected in open-ended series by wires 14, the free ends terminating in output terminals 15, 16. The terminals 15, 16 are connected to an amplifier 17 which is connected to a relay 18 which is in turn connected to a warning light 19 and an electromagnet 20. The electromagnet is arranged to move the movable part 24 of the valve 24a so as to reduce the supply of fuel to the injectors 32 in the event of change of temperature detected by one of the thermocouples 13. In a second embodiment, a plurality of arcuate pairs 36, 37 of dissimilar metals (such as nickel aluminium alloys and nickel chromium alloys) are disposed so as to form an open-ended ring of aerofoil section which is supported within the jet pipe by means of insulated radial struts 34. The terminals 15a, 16a are connected to warning and control apparatus as in Fig. 1. In an engine having say nine combustion chambers, the chambers can be divided into groups of three and one junction can be disposed downstream of each group of three chambers so as to sense the general temperature of the group.
