Abstract

A composition which may be cross-linked by exposure to ionizing radiation, particularly X-rays, gamma rays and high-speed electrons comprises a vinyl chloride polymer, particularly polyvinyl chloride or a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, a monomeric alkyl ester of an alpha-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and a monomeric vinyl aromatic compound or a substitution product thereof, such as styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, divinyl benzene, vinyl toluene, monochlorostyrene, dichlorostyrene and vinylnaphthalene. The ester may be an ester of maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic, mesaconic or methylene malonic acid, the preferred material being di-2-ethylhexyl maleate.ALSO:A composition comprises a vinyl chloride polymer, particularly polyvinyl chloride or a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, a monomeric alkyl ester of an alpha-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, and a monomeric vinyl aromatic compound or a substitution product thereof, such as styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, divinyl benzene, vinyl toluene, monochlorostyrene, dichlorostyrene, and vinylnaphthalene. The ester may be an ester of maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic, mesaconic or methylene malonic acid, the preferred material being di-2-ethylhexyl maleate. The composition may be cross-linked by exposure to ionizing radiation, particularly X-rays, gamma rays and highspeed electrons.
