Abstract
In a method of applying a metal-containing coating solution or paint to solid dielectrics such as mica or ceramic plates, the paint is first spread on the surface of a thin base or carrier sheet, for example of synthetic plastic material or regenerated cellulose, which may first be coated with a release layer, e.g. paraffin wax, and allowed to dry, the base sheet is placed against the dielectric paint-side on, and a heated die is pressed against the back of the base sheet so as to cause the paint under the die to transfer to the dielectric surface. The paint may be applied to the whole surface of the carrier and the die may determine the size and shape of the coating applied to the dielectric, or the paint may be applied only to selected areas of the carrier, which areas are then positioned against portions of dielectric to be coated and a large die used to transfer coatings to several portions simultaneously. The coatings may subsequently be fired. Two coatings may be applied to form a silver layer, the first having a high volatile content and a low silver content, the second having a high silver content. A suitable synthetic plastic for the carrier sheet is polyethylene terephthalate.
