Abstract

A fine-pored diaphragm, which may be used for the separation of uranium isotopes by way of uranium hexafluoride, is produced by the decomposition of a metal carbonyl (Group II) at the surface of a heated fine metallic mesh, e.g. 5000 to 20,000 meshes per square centimetre or of a perforated ceramic surface followed by consolidation of the deposited metal particles, e.g. by rolling, pressing and sintering. Before use for isotope separation, the diaphragm may be passivated by treatment with fluorine or hydrophioric acid, preferably mixed with inert gases. Specification 832,318 is referred to.ALSO:Fine pored metal bodies are produced by the deposition of metal particles on a heated surface from a metal carbonyl, e.g. nickel carbonyl, or a mixture of carbonyls which may be diluted with an inert gas and preferably decomposed by mixing with an inert gas heated to a temperature above the decomposition temperature of the carbonyl. The surface, which may also be heated to above the decomposition temperature, may be a fine net e.g. of 5,000 to 20,000 meshes per square centimeter, of the same metal as deposited from the carbonyl or it may be a perforated ceramic surface. Further layers of particles of a different size may be deposited on the first layer in subsequent operations. A small amount e.g. 0.001 mol per cent of an oxygen-containing gas may be added to the reaction mixture, and after-treatment of the body may include sintering in a reducing atmosphere at 200 to 500 DEG C. under pressure, rolling, heating in vacuo and passivation by treatment with fluorine or hydrofluoric acid. Specification 832,318 is referred to.
