Abstract

A polymer of at least one 1-olefin having no more than four carbon atoms per molecule, a density of at least 0.94 at 25 DEG C. and a crystallinity of at least 75% at 25 DEG C. is subjected to a dosage of from 105 to 1011 roentgens of radiation, and the irradiated polymer thereafter heated to a temperature above its softening point. The polymer is preferably polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene and a small amount of one or more other 1-olefins having no more than four carbon atoms per molecule. A filler such as carbon black, a clay, silica, kaolin, silicate, titanium dioxide, hydrated alumina, calcined magnesia, calcium carbonate, zinc sulphide or zinc oxide may be incorporated in the polymer before or after irradiation and heat treatment.ALSO:A polymer of at least one 1-olefin having no more than four carbon atoms per molecule, a density of at least 0.94 at 25 DEG C. and a crystallinity of at least 75% at 25 DEG C. is subjected to a p dosage of from 105 to 1011 roentgens of radiation, and the irradiated polymer thereafter heated to a temperature above its softening point. The polymer is preferably polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene and a small amount of one or more other 1-olefins having no more than four carbon atoms per molecule. A filler such as carbon black, a clay, silica, kaolin, calcium silicate, titanium dioxide, hydrated alumina, calcined magnesia, calcium carbonate, zinc sulphide or zinc oxide, may be incorporated in the polymer before or after irradiation and heat treatment. The products may be used for the production of floor or wall tiles, dishes, trays, waste-baskets, gears, pipes and for coating wire.
