Abstract

Cellular compositions are made from polymers and/or copolymers of aliphatic olefins by incorporation of a hydrated salt of a Group Ia or Group IIa metal and by heating this mixture to a temperature above the softening temperature of the polymer and sufficient to release water from the hydrated salt and thus expand the polymer. The salt forming anion may be phosphate, acid phosphate, hypophosphite, chromate, sulphate, tartrate, acid tartrate, citrate, acid citrate, acetate, lactate and borate and salts of magnesium, potassium, calcium, barium, strontium, beryllium, lithium and sodium are included. Polyethylene, both low and high density types, polypropylene and the essentially crystalline polymers of higher mono-a -olefines, and copolymers of ethylene or propylene with each other or with another monomer may be foamed. In addition to the hydrated salt a chemical blowing agent may be incorporated into the mixture and azido cross-linking agents such as a poly(sulphonazide), R(SO2N3)x, or polyazidoformate, R-(OCON3)x where R is an organic radical inert to cross-linking reactions and x is an integer preferably from 2 to 4 may also be used. Additives may, include plasticizers, fillers and stabilizers.
