Abstract

A ball-and-socket joint, e.g. for a gas spring, has a socket 20 for receiving a spherical ball 25 of a ball stud which is mounted onto a member, where the ball is free to undergo rotary displacement within the socket. The socket comprises a main socket body 21 provided with a penetrating hole 26, a ring spring 23 having a discontinuous part, and a cap 22. The cap has a cylindrical part 34 which is formed with a space at an inner periphery thereof into which the ball is inserted, and an external screw 32 for engaging with a screw thread 29 of a large diameter part 30 of the hole 26 in the main socket body. The cap is screwed into the main socket body with the ring spring positioned in correspondence with a tapered part 31 of the penetrating hole. The end of the cylindrical part 34 pushes the ring spring 23 against the tapered part 31 when the cap is screwed in, and prevents the diameter of the ring spring from being enlarged, so that the ball inserted within the cylindrical part is prevented by the spring from slipping out of the cylindrical part. When the cap is unscrewed, the diameter of the ring spring can be enlarged so that the ball is free to slip in and out of the main socket body by passing through the ring spring. <IMAGE>
