Abstract

831,686. Force-feeding lubricating. WAKEFIELD & CO. Ltd., C. C. Oct. 12, 1956 [Oct. 12, 1955; March 14, 1956], Nos. 29107/55 and 8020/56. Class 12 (3). A multi-point lubricant distributer comprises cylinders 10, 11, 12, 13 in each of which there is disposed a double-acting plunger having two spaced circumferential grooves through one of which lubricant passes when the plunger is in an appropriate position within the cylinder. When the plungers are in the positions shown in Fig. 1, lubricant supplied through a conduit 46 passes, via a conduit 47, a groove 54 and a conduit 33, to the right-hand end of cylinder 11 and forces a plunger 62 to the left, thereby expelling lubricant from the left-hand end of cylinder 11 through a conduit 32 and a groove 47 to a delivery passage 16. Movement of the plunger 62 to the left permits lubricant under pressure from supply conduit 46 to pass through a groove 55 and a conduit 36 to the right-hand end of cylinder 12 forcing a plunger 63 to the left, thereby expelling lubricant from the left-hand end of the cylinder 12 through a conduit 37 and a groove 56 to a delivery passage 21. The lubricant under pressure then passes through a conduit 40 to the right-hand end of cylinder 13 forcing a plunger 64 to the left and expelling lubricant from the left-hand end of cylinder 13 through a conduit 49 and a groove 58 to a delivery passage 25. The lubricant under pressure then passes through a conduit 44 to the right-hand end of the cylinder 10 forcing a plunger 61 to the left and expelling lubricant from the left-hand end of cylinder 10 through a conduit 45 and a groove 60 to a discharge passage 29. The movement of plunger 49 to the left cuts off the supply of lubricant under pressure to conduit 33 and instead places a conduit 32 in communication, through groove 53, with the lubricant supply. The conduit 32 is connected to the left-hand end of cylinder 11 and lubricant under pressure passing therethrough forces plunger 62 to the right, expelling lubricant from the right-hand end of cylinder 11 through conduit 33 and groove 54 to a delivery passage 17. The movement of plunger 62 to the right places supply conduit 46 in communication, through groove 56, with conduit 37 through which lubricant is supplied to the left-hand end of cylinder 12 forcing plunger 63 to the right. Lubricant at the right-hand end of cylinder 12 is expelled through conduit 36, groove 55, to a discharge passage 20. The lubricant under pressure then passes through conduit 41 to the left-hand end of cylinder 13 forcing the plunger 64 to the right and expelling lubricant through conduit 40 and groove 57 to a discharge passage 24. Finally, the lubricant under pressure passes through a conduit 45 to the left-hand end of cylinder 10 and forces plunger 61 to the right. The cycle is then repeated. The unit is built up of flat blocks having bores closed by screw-plugs, and an extension on one of the plungers provides an indicator the movement of which shows whether or not the distributer is functioning. In a modification, the connections of conduits 44 and 45 to cylinder 13 are intercharged and the connections of conduits 32 and 33 to cylinder 10 are intercharged. In another modification, the automatic operation of the movement of the plunger 49 in cylinder 10 is replaced by manual control thereof. In a further modification, three parallel plungers are provided with grooves at their centres which are engaged by detent plungers located between each pair of cylinders which ensure that only one plunger is free to move at any one time.
