Class 146(3) A pencil sharpener comprises a cutting device h having cutting blades h<SP>11</SP> urged towards a tube d by a spring n, the device h and tube d being relatively axially slidable. The device h has projections h<SP>1</SP> extending into longitudinal slots q<SP>1</SP> of a body q secured to the tube d by an internally threaded cup c. The tube d and device h have interengaging teeth g and f respectively to lock the tube d and device h together. In operation, the tip b of the pencil is pressed into a tapered bore e of the tube d, such that the lead o contacts cutting blades h<SP>11</SP>, while the claws of the chuck m press the device downwardly by engagement with plates p. The teeth g and f are then disengaged to lock the cutting device h in lowered position by relative rotation of the device h and tube d.. The pencil is then turned in a direction contrary to that used to produce locking of the device h, in the bore e to cause the blades h" to sharpen the lead o until the projections h<SP>1</SP> engage a tube u adjustably screwed to the body q, material removed from the lead being collected in a cup s.
