Abstract

831,588. Endless conveyers. BALJAK CORPORATTON. March 28, 1958 [April 24, 1957], No. 10001/58. Class 78 (1). Cardboard packing boxes 37 1 , 37 2 , &c. supplied at irregular intervals are fed in timed relation to a device for compacting the contents of the boxes prior to closing their flaps by apparatus comprising a guide channel defined by lateral walls 11, 12, a pair of continuously. driven endless belts 14, 15 arranged in the bottom of the channel and a pair of chains 25, 26 having lugs 27, 28, respectively, adapted to engages the forward corners of the boxes. The chains are driven at a slower speed than the belts 14, 15, so that each box is engaged by a pair of lugs 27, 28. At the forward ends of the chain runs the 1ug release, the boxes in turn to a pair of belts 46, 47 driven continuously at a faster speed than the belts 16, 17, there being associated with the belts 14, 15 an endless chain 52 having lugs 53 and driven at a faster speed than the belts 46, 47. The arrangement is such that the boxes released by the lugs 27, 28 are accelerated and spaced by the belts 46, 47, so that they can be engaged by the still faster moving lugs 53 for delivery to the compacting device. To ensure that the boxes engage the lugs 27, 28, a pair of rotating arms 40, 41 is provided which alternately deflect the boxes to one side and the other so that when the boxes follow one another closely they will be caused to engage lugs 27 and 28 alternately. As indicated in Fig. 2, when the boxes follow one another at longer intervals, two consecutive boxes may both engage lugs 28 at one side of the guide channel. As the boxes are acceler. ated by the belts 46, 47 they are received in a narrower guide channel only slightly wider than the boxes. The faster moving chain 52 is driven in timed relation with the chains 25, 26 such that each box is transferred to the belts 46, 47 behind one lug 53 and well in advance of the following lug 53, the difference in speed between the chain 52 and the belts 46, 47 being such that the following lug 53 catches up with the box and transfers it to a conveyer of the compacting device in desired timed relation with the latter. The conveyer of the compacting device comprises compartments formed by flaps 61, 62 carried by an endless band 60. Of these flaps the flaps 61 are fixed and the flaps 62 are pivoted and controlled by guides (not shown) such that they are retracted when a box is transferred to the band 60 by a lug 53 and afterwards raised to trap the box. In a modification, Fig. 12, only one chain 25 is provided at one side of the guide channel formed by the walls 11, 12 and a belt 15<SP>1</SP> driven at a higher speed than the belt 14 replaces the belt, 15, so that the boxes are turned towards the lugs on the chain 25. The arm 40 is omitted and the arm 41 rotates at double speed. Specifications 739,781 and 746,468 are referred to.
