Class 20(3) A stairway or doorway guard comprises a panel B and a pair of side members C adapted to be supported vertically in brackets F. As shown in Fig. 1 the distance between the side members may be adjusted by sliding them along the rails A. In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the side members are attached to U-shaped members D having limbs slidable within the rails A, chains E preventing complete withdrawal of the limbs from the rails. In a further modification (Fig. 4, not shown) the rails and the panel are each formed in two parts, the parts of the panel being connected by a check chain and each carrying a support member, and the parts of each rail being arranged telescopically,
