Abstract

830,965. Liquid fuel and air supplies to burners. ASSOCIATED BRITISH COMBUSTION Ltd., and COOPER, R. B. May 4. 1956 [Feb. 4, 1955], No. 3367/55. Class 75(1) The liquid fuel feed to a sprayer burner movable into and from a firing position is from an oil supply chamber movable with the burner and having a valve controlled oil inlet and a valve controlled oil return flow outlet which are individually or simultaneously regulated to vary the ultimate flow of oil to the sprayer body together with means for varying the air inlet of the burner in proportion to the amount of oil passing to the sprayer body. As shown, the valves contained within the oil supply and return chamber 2 movable with the burner 1 further into or out of the furnace 17, are operated by separate toothed portions 6, 7 of a stationary gear rack 5 so that the gear 8 controlling the inlet valve at the end of pipe 3 moves out of engagement with the rack portion 6 when the inlet valve becomes fully open and the gear 9 controlling the outlet valve leading to the pipe 4 then becomes engaged with the rack portion 7 so that continued movement of the burner 1 into the furnace results in the flow of oil through the return valve being gradually stopped while the flow of oil through the inlet valve remains constant whereby a correspondingly increased amount of oil passes to the burner. At the same time a cowling 12 is displaced progressively over the air inlets 15, 18, of two or more air passages 13-14 and 1/13 through which air passes to the discharge end of the burner. To this end cowling 12 is fitted on two parallel bars 11 connected to a pair of bars 10 laterally extending from the chamber 2 so as to move with it to move the cowling to uncover the inlets 15, 18 in succession. The burner may be moved manually, or by a piston operated hydraulically or pneumatically.
