Abstract
An olefinic elastomer is protected against the action of atmospheric agents by incorporating therein, at the end of the mixing cycle, between 0.1 and 5% by weight of the elastomer of a nickel xanthate of the formula <FORM:0830914/IV (a)/1> wherein R and R1 are each an aliphatic, olefinic, aromatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon radical of not more than 12 C atoms. Elastomers specified are natural rubber, copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile, polychloroprenes and polyisoprenes. The slight coloration imparted by the xanthates may be masked by titania. It is stated that certain antioxidants, e.g. the phenylene-diamines, or activators, e.g. zinc mercapto-benzimide azolate, have a synergistic effect on the xanthates, and that certain fillers having a high absorbent power, e.g. C blacks, result in a further improvement in the resistance to atmospheric action. The xanthates may also act as secondary vulcanization accelerators. In examples, Ni isopropyl xanthate is incorporated in conventional solid or latex rubber mixes.
