Abstract
In a process for the purification of terephthalic acid containing coloured or colourforming impurities, the crude acid and the impurities are dissolved in a dialkyl sulphoxide, if desired in admixture with other known solvents for terephthalic acid, if necessary with the assistance of heat and the purified acid is recovered by separation from the solution in which the impurities remain dissolved. Dimethyl and diethyl sulphoxides are the sulphoxides specified and other known solvents mentioned are acetic acid, benzoic acid and water. The terephthalic acid may be recovered from its solution in the sulphoxide by cooling or by dilution with water. Preferably dimethyl sulphoxide is employed at atmospheric pressure though superatmospheric pressures may be employed, if desired. Examples, which include a continuous process, are described. The conversion of purified terephthalic acid to a polyester is described (see Group IV (a)).ALSO:Polyesters of terephthalic acid are prepared by esterifying terephthalic acid with 7 mols. of ethylene glycol and subjecting such ester to poly-condensation in the presence of antimony oxide, such terephthalic acid having been purified from coloured or colour-forming impurities by a process in which the crude acid and the impurities are dissolved in a dialkyl sulphoxide, if desired in admixture with other known solvents for terephthalic acid, if necessary with the assistance of heat and the purified acid, is recovered by separation from the solution in which the impurities remain dissolved (see Group IV (b)).
