Abstract
830,352. Thermionic-cathode tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Aug. 3, 1956, No. 23986/56. Class 39(1). A filamentary thermionic cathode for use in higher power valves comprises a set of filament wires 3, lying on the surface of an imaginary cylinder, welded at one end to a metal ring 1 which is attached by means of a set of flexible metal tapes 7 and a flange 6 to a coaxial current lead 5. This arrangement allows for axial and radial relative movement between the cathode and the lead 5. As shown the filament wires of tungsten or thoriated tungsten are arranged as a reticulated grid welded together at each cross-over 4, but the wires may form a squirrel cage. The current lead 5 is a hollow cylindrical or frusto-conical tube of molybdenum sheet, to the upper end of which is secured the skirted support flange 6. To allow for differential radial thermal expansion between the filament wires and the current lead the tapes are provided with crimped portions 8. At their lower ends the filament wires are welded to a tantalum or molybdenum ring 2. A disc 9 is secured to the lower end of the tube 5 and an annular dish 10 is secured inside the ring 2, so that the cathode structure may be mounted on a pair of rods 11 secured respectively to the disc 9 and dish 10. Alternatively, coaxial tubes may be secured to the ring 2 and tube 5 to provide a coaxial stem construction for base connections and supporting means.
