Abstract
830,251. Nuclear fusion reactors; discharge apparatus. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 24, 1957 [June 4, 1956], No. 17255/56. Drawings to Specification. Classes 39(1) and 39(4). In a gas discharge apparatus comprising a torus in which a constricted ring discharge may be produced, the walls of the torus are made of a material of high electrical conductivity and of a thickness large compared with the greatest skin depth of eddy currents induced in the walls by movement of the discharge. In apparatus where the discharge is induced by a pulse transformer and the pulses are of about 500 microseconds duration the walls may be of aluminium “ inch thick. It is explained that if the walls are sufficiently thick the induced eddy currents stabilise the discharge. The apparatus may be used for research into the production of thermonuclear reactions. Specifications 830,252, and 830,254 are referred to.
