Abstract
830,224. Boosting transformers. BRENTFORD TRANSFORMERS Ltd. Dec. 9, 1957 [Dec. 10, 1956], No. 37653/56. Classes 38 (2) and 38(4). A voltage regulator comprises a main tapped transformer winding 1 with offload contacts 7, 8 movable stepwise alternately engaging with alternate taps which are connected through loadbreaking contacts 9, 10 to the centre-tapped secondary winding 6 of an auxiliary transformer, the primary winding 4 of which is supplied from a secondary winding 2 preferably on the same core as winding 1 which feeds a control winding 3 having two on load contacts 11, 12. With contact 8 supplying the load through contact 10 and winding 6, and contacts 11, 12 in the minimum voltage position, moving the contacts 11, 12 will increase the voltage to the mid point between that given by taps 7, 8. Contact 9 may now be closed but no change in the output voltage will take place. If contact 10 is now opened, contact 7 will supply the load, but as the fluxes in the transformer primary and secondary windings 4, 6 are now in opposition the output voltage will still not be effected. The output voltage may now be increased by moving contacts 11, 12 towards the other extreme position. The winding 3 is arranged to give a buck or boost equal to half the difference between the taps on the main winding. A differential gear and mechanical and electrical interlocks are provided to ensure that contacts 7, 8 can only be moved while the relevant contacts 9, 10 are opened, and that the latter contacts can only be operated when contacts 11, 12 are in their extreme positions.
