Abstract

829,735. Ventilating vehicles. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. June 5, 1958 [June 5, 1957], No. 18023/58. Class 137 A motor vehicle cowl ventilation system comprises a cowl panel 12 and a panel 26 joined to form a shell, an air intake opening 16 in the cowl and an air exhaust opening at each end of the shell, a curved air guide 39, 41 secured to the shell having a cross-section smaller centrally and larger adjacent each exhaust opening so that air enters through the intake 16 and circulates about the air guide 39, 41 towards the exhaust openings, and means in the panel 26 for draining moisture entering the intake 16. The cowl is forwardly of the windshield 11 and the air guide is in parts 39, 41 secured to the cowl by a flange 43 to define a chamber 47 receiving air spiraled outwardly through the exhaust holes so that moisture is thrown against the panel 26. The chamber 47 has a radial section decreasing outwardly from the centre and is substantially lower at the exhaust holes than centrally. An aperture 54 in each guide 39, 41 drains any moisture deposited into the panel 26 having an apertured nozzle 33. At each outer end the panel 26 is formed into a box-like section 38 to which is welded the base 42 of the air guide 39, 41 formed into an arcuate section 44 having a flange 49 which may be welded to the section 13. To the sections 38 and 42 is welded a water baffle plate 52 to cover the lower part of guide openings 53 (or for example, itmay be decreased in area compared to the air guide), whence the air is directed into a top chamber 58, through an aperture 59 into the air outlet vent 61 and exhausted by operating a damper valve, to enter the compartment directly through one aperture or through a heater and air conditioning conduit and another aperture or both ways.
