Abstract
Water-repellent coating compositions for application to transparent surfaces such as the windscreens of aeroplanes, boats, automobiles or optical lenses of periscopes, binoculars and range finders consist of homogeneous mixtures of a hydrocarbon wax, a polyamide resin and an aliphatic amide with an alkyl group of 9-32 carbon atoms as blending agent. A refined hydrocarbon wax having a melting point of 123-149 DEG F. is preferred. The preferred polyamide is prepared from a polymerized unsaturated acid, e.g. dilinoleic acid, and ethylene diamine and has a softening point of 95-115 DEG C. and a molecular weight of 3000-6500. Capryl, lauryl, myristyl, palmityl, stearyl, oleyl, linoleyl, linolenyl amides and hydrogenated tallow amides are specified. The specified ingredients may be present in proportion ranging from 20 to 50% and, in the examples, equal proportions of paraffin wax polyamide resin and oleyl amide are specified. The surface is preferably first cleaned and then coated with a composition as described in Specification 829,622 which itself adheres strongly to the transparent surface and acts to bond the water-repellent coating thereto.ALSO:Water-repellent coating compositions for application to a transparent surface such as the wind-screens of aeroplanes, boats, automobiles or optical lenses of periscopes, binoculars and range finders, consist of a homogenous mixture of a hydrocarbon wax, a polyamide resin and an aliphatic amide with an alkyl group of 9-32 carbon atoms as blending agent.
