Abstract
A coating composition consists of a mixture of a polyethylene resin of average molecular weight within the range of about 10,000 to about 16,000, a hydrocarbon wax, and an ester type, animal, or vegetable wax. The wax may be microcrystalline, paraffin, candellela, castor, palm, or spermacete. Specification 829,622 is referred to.ALSO:The surfaces of solid transparent articles are coated by applying a thin film of a bonding material described in Specification 829,622 and overcoating the film with a homogeneous mixture of a hydrocarbon wax and a polyethylene resin having an average molecular weight within the range of 10,000 to about 16,000. The mixture may also contain an ester type wax. The surface of the articles are cleaned prior to applying the coatings. The bonding material of Specification 829,622 is a composition comprising an organo - silicon compound selected from compounds of the general formula (R)2 Si(OR1)2, and R.Si(OR1)3 wherein R is an alkyl group containing 3 to 5 carbon atoms and R1 is an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, which is applied to the surface and allowed to hydrolyse in situ by reaction with atmospheric moisture. Waxes mentioned are microcystalline, paraffin, candellila, castor, palm, and spermaceti. The articles may be made of glass or polymethylmethacrylate. Specified articles are windshields for airplanes, boats, automobiles, and locomotives and lenses such as those for periscopes, binoculars, and range finders.
