Abstract
The invention comprises 2-methyl-8-phenylnonene-(7)-one-(4) useful in perfumery. It may be prepared by heating phenyl methyl ethenyl carbinol with an ester of isovaleroylacetic acid, e.g. at 140-190 DEG C.; an isovaleroylacetate derivative is formed and undergoes rearrangement and decarboxylation on heating. The conversion is preferably effected in the presence of an aluminium lower-alkoxide, e.g. aluminium isopropoxide. Alternatively, the phenyl methyl ethenyl carbinol may be treated with a halogenating agent, e.g. a phosphorus halide or a hydrogen halide, to give by rearrangement a g - phenyl - g - methyl - allyl halide which is then condensed with an alkali metal derivative of an isovaleroylacetic acid ester. The desired ketone is obtained by hydrolysis and decarboxylation of the condensation product. This may be effected in one step by heating with aqueous alcoholic alkali metal hydroxide or in two steps by mild saponification, e.g. with dilute alkali-metal hydroxide followed by decarboxylation by heating in aqueous acid solution, e.g. hydrohalic acid solution.
