Abstract
In an acetylene generator having a carbide hopper above a gas generating chamber, the hopper having at its lower end a valve regulating the carbide flow and controlled by the gas pressure, the valve is connected on its lower side to pressure-responsive means by an upwardly extending element situated to one side of the valve orifice. Preferably the valve is connected to a cross-bar in turn connected to one or two push-pull rods which is or are connected to the pressure-responsive means through movement magnifying means. Also moving parts are preferably enclosed to shield them from carbide dust. Referring to Fig. 1, a carbide hopper 1 is removably attached to a gas generator 2. The flow of carbide is controlled by a plug 10 which is connected by a cross-bar 12 and two push-pull rods 13 through movement magnifying means to a conventional pressure-responsive diaphragm 7 controlled in turn by spring means in a casing 8. An internal casing 28 and tubes 29 protect <PICT:0829542/IV (b)/1> moving parts from carbide dust. In the event of the plug 10 falling further than normally allowed by the pressure-responsive means, a ball 30 normally held by a catch is released due to a trigger 37 striking a ring 40. The ball thus released blocks a hole 31 through which the carbide normally flows into the gas generator and cuts off further flow of carbide.
