In a modification of the gas-scrubber of the parent Specification the adjustable valve member 42<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, is situated at the point of entry of the dirty gas inlet 301 into the shell 10<SP>1</SP>. The adjustable valve member may, as shown in Fig. 2, comprise a pivoted flap element 106 movable by an arm 114.
