Abstract
An anaesthetic preparation comprises a soluble barbiturate salt and a soluble salt of a b ,b -disubstituted glutarimide of general formula <FORM:0829355/VI/1> wherein R1 and R2 are lower alkyl groups containing up to 6 carbon atoms and which may be joined to form an alicyclic ring, and X is a metal chosen from Group I or II of Mendelief's Periodic Table. The barbiturate and glutarimide are present preferably as their salts with alkali metals especially sodium. The glutarimide may be present in amounts of between 10 and 50% by weight of that of the barbiturate. The preparation may be in the form of a dry powder which gives an injectable solution when, for example, sterile water is added, or it may be in the form of an injectable solution which may also contain propylene glycol and also one or both of dimethyl formamide and diethylacetamide. The barbiturates used may be "short" or "ultra-short" acting. Examples of barbiturates given are hexabarbitone, thiopentone, and pentobarbitone. The substituted glutarimides are exemplified by b -ethyl-b -methyl glutarimide. Up to 53% by weight of the glutarimide salt may be replaced in the preparation by the free imide.
