Abstract

Pressure-rupturable microscopic capsules containing a fluid in which is dispersed particles of magnetic material, e.g. black or red magnetic oxide, carbonyl iron, ferrous magnetic alloys, nickel and its magnetic alloys may be used in the form of a suspension for coating a sheet to make record material for printing by magnetic means. The magnetic materials may be permanently magnetized in the capsules or they may be magnetized by magnetic field applied to the capsules. They are suspended in an oily vehicle, e.g. chlorinated diphenyl or petroleum fractions of low boiling-point. As much as 50% by volume of the magnetic powder, as compared with the oil, may be included within the capsule. Methods of making the capsules and applying them to sheets of paper are described in Specifications 751,600 and 759,800, where formation of the colloidal surface of the drops round the metal-oil suspension by coacervation is described. A colouring material may be added to the oil to increase the coloration of the droplets. As described, 30 parts of magnetic iron oxide are suspended in 160 parts trichlordiphenyl containing 1 part oleic acid, 0.1 gs. zinc stearate and 1 part dioctyl-phthalate until the average agglomerate size of the oxide particles is about 3 microns. The suspension is emulsified first into a gelatine-water solution (isoelectric point of pH8) at a pH of 6.5, and then into a gum arabic-water solution also at pH 6.5. The mixture is diluted with water and its pH is adjusted to 4.7 to bring about coacervation with deposit of the colloid material round the oil droplets. A 37% solution of formaldehyde is added to the mixture and the temperature is lowered to produce gelling of the gelatine and then a 5% solution of a copolymer of polyvinyl methyl ether and maleic anhydride is added with stirring to prevent the capsules from agglomerating in the subsequent hardening step which is effected by adjusting the pH of the mixture with NaOH to 9-10 so that the formaldehyde reacts with the colloid to harden it. The dispersion thus obtained can be coated directly onto paper and dried or the water may be removed by spray drying and a fine powder obtained consisting of the discrete capsules containing the magnetic material floating in the included vehicle.
