Abstract

<PICT:0828955/III/1> A fractionating tower contains horizontally-disposed perforated trays which have tabs projecting above their upper surface at an angle so that vapour flowing through the perforations in the trays cause liquid flowing down the tower to flow across the trays to a downcomer. In a preferred embodiment vapours ascending from the bottom of a tower pass first through the perforations 9 of the lowest tray 1 and subsequently through the perforations of trays 2 and 3, respectively. Descending liquid is caused to flow across each tray by the angle at which the ascending vapours pass through the perforations and then descends via a downcomer 4 to the lowermost tray 1 and then via downcomer 5 to a draw-off pan 6 and a conduit 7 to a thermosyphon reboiler (not shown) and returned to the tower via conduit 10. A trough 8 is situated below at a lower level than the perforations 9 of tray 1 and is capable of collecting at least a portion of any liquid dropping through the perforations 9 and conducting the liquid so collected into the draw-off pan 6.
