Abstract
A process for the emulsion polymerization of a conjugated diene having the general formula CH2=CR1-CR2=CHR3 in which R1 and R2 are hydrogen atoms or methyl or ethyl groups and R3 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, in the presence of a free radical-generating catalyst, comprises adding to the polymerization mixture after at least 70% conversion to polymers has taken place, an aliphatic mercaptan having at least 8 carbon atoms in the molecule in an amount of at least 0.02 part by weight for each 100 parts of monomer or monomers originally charged. Specified polymers are those of 1,3-butadiene, 1,3-pentadiene, 2-methyl 1,3-butadiene, 2-ethyl-1,3-butadiene and 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene: and these monomers may be copolymerized with styrene para-chloro-styrene, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and esters and nitriles of acrylic and methacrylic acids. The mercaptan preferably has 8-16 carbon atoms and has the mercapto group attached to a tertiary carbon atom. In examples 0.1 to 0.2 part of tretiary-dodecyl-mercaptan is added in addition to any that may already be present when the polymerization had essentially stopped. Stearic acid-potassium hydroxide, potassium chloride and potassium persulphate may also be present in the emulsion mix. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 625,647.
