Abstract

1,220,611. Foamable polymeric beads. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 3 April, 1968 [5 April, 1967; 16 May, 1967], No. 16035/68. Headings C3C and C3P. A foamable polymer composition in the form of beads comprises (A) 99.5 to 70% by weight of a copolymer of (a) a vinyl-substituted benzene derivative of formula where R and R<SP>1</SP> each represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group of 1 to 3 carbon atoms or a mixture thereof with an alkyl ester of methacrylic or acrylic acid, the alkyl radical having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and (b) acrylonitrile or an α-alkyl derivative thereof, the ratio of the ingredients (a) to (b) being 60: 40 to 90: 10 by weight; (B) 0.5 to 30% by weight of an elastomer containing no more than 5% by weight of gel, which is polybutadiene or a styrene-butadiene copolymer containing no more than 25% by weight of styrene units; and (C) as foaming agent, a liquid organic compound of boiling point below 80‹ C. capable of swelling or at least partially dissolving the elastomer component, absorbed by the elastomer component, wherein substantially all the polymer component (A) is uniformly dispersed as fine particles in a continuous phase of the elastomer component (B). The composition may be made by polymerizing a solution of the elastomer and monomers in the presence of a free-radical initiator containing an azo group e.g. 2,2<SP>1</SP>- azobis - isobutyronitrile in bulk and/or aqueous suspension and the foaming agent is added, before, during or after the polymerization. The elastomer may be polybutadiene or a styrene-butadiene elastomer and the copolymer may be of styrene and acrylonitrile with optionally methyl or ethyl methacrylate or acrylate or methacrylonitrile. The foaming agent may be n-pentane, isopentane or petroleum ether. The beads may be foamed by treatment with steam.
