Abstract

A catalyst used in polymerizing olefines is obtained by applying chromium oxide to a carrier of aluminium phosphate, e.g. by impregnating aluminium phosphate with aqueous solutions of chromic acid followed by separation and heating of the solid phase.ALSO:Olefines are polymerized using as catalyst chromium oxide applied to aluminium phosphate as carrier, e.g. prepared by impregnating aluminium phosphate with aqueous solutions of chromic acid, followed by separation and heating of the solid phase. The polymerization may be batchwise or continuous and is preferably in an inert solvent such as cyclohexane, heptane or octane. Olefines specified are ethylene, propylene and dienes. The catalyst may subsequently be removed from the polymer products by the use of a base or an acid (e.g. caustic soda or potash, hydrochloric, sulphuric or hydrofluoric acid-these preferably being used in the presence of an inert organic solvent) and may then be recovered by neutralization of the solution obtained. The example illustrates the addition of further ethylene during the polymerization reaction, and also describes the purification of polymer with methanolic hydrochloric acid and methanol.
