Abstract
A process for preparing hardened aggregates from loose, finely divided reduced iron concentrate material containing an appreciable amount of metallic iron comprises the steps of agglomerating the material to form a green aggregate, treating the green aggregate with carbon dioxide and moisture, and ageing the treated aggregate in the presence of an oxygen-containing gas to convert the green aggregate to a hard aggregate. Finely ground reduced iron ore containing at least 60% metallic iron and 1% moisture is pressed into briquettes using pressures between 500 and 100,000 pounds square inch and then treated with carbon dioxide followed by ageing in air. Part of the moisture may be added simultaneously with the carbon dioxide. Pre-reduction may take place in a rotary kiln and treatment with CO2 may be at atmospheric pressure or above.
