An extrusion machine 2, particularly for ceramic materials, driven through a shaft 5 from a gearbox 4, is associated with a device for pre-conditioning the material which comprises a de-airing chamber 3 and a stirrer 8 driven from a gear-box 6. The outlet from the de-airing chamber coincides with the inlet to the extrusion machine and the gear-box 6 has a bottom flanged socket by which it is connected to the top of the gear-box 4. Clutches between the driving pulleys 10 and the gearboxes are operable from the outlet end of the machine through linkages. The machine is convertible to one without air extraction by removing the components 3, 8 and 6.
