[Also in Group XXXIII] In arresting means for aeroplanes and other vehicles comprising arresting nets or cables or the like having one or both ends thereof connected to a brake wire 1 adapted during the arresting action to be unwound from a brake drum 3 controlled by hydraulic or pneumatic brake means 4, a valve 12 for supplying pressure fluid to the brake means from a source of pressure fluid such as the cylinder 5, is adapted to be opened by " dog " means, such as the studs 14 on the drum 3, engaging levers 13 operating the valve 12 on movement of the brake wire. With such an arrangement, the brake action does not start until the vehicle has overcome the inertia force of the net, wires and drum and retardation is carried out more gently. Pressure fluid supply from the reservoir 5 is governed in its passage to valve 12 by the pressure reducing valve 8 which may be adjusted to give braking forces appropriate to the type of vehicle to be arrested, i.e. aeroplanes, motor cars or the like. Pressure gauges 9 and 10 indicate the pressures upstream and downstream of the valve 8 respectively. The brake means shown comprises plate compressor brakes 4 and 4<SP>1</SP> at each end of the drum, the pressure fluid supply being passed to the lower brake 4<SP>1</SP> by way of a central channel 15 which is of a selected volume so as to act to produce a graduated brake application.
