Abstract

An attrition-resistant alumina, consisting predominantly of eta-alumina, and adapted for use as a catalyst support, is prepared by hydrolysing an aluminium alcoholate, preferably derived from a C5 or higher alcohol, at a pH of 3 to 5 with an aqueous solution of volatile inorganic acids or carboxylic acids having at least 3 carbon atoms, preferably HCl or a C3-C5 carboxylic acid, such as propionic, butyric, valeric, lactic, hydracrylic, glyceric, levulinic, malonic, glutaric, succinic, pimelic, citric, a - or b -chloropropionic, and tartaric acids. The temperature is preferably between 32 DEG and 100 DEG F., especially below 70 DEG F. The resultant alumina precipitate is aged in the form of an aqueous slurry for at least 5 hours, preferably at a temperature of 60 DEG to 100 DEG F., especially below 80 DEG F., and the alumina is then dried and heated to 400 DEG to 1500 DEG F., especially 1100 DEG to 1450 DEG F., to convert to eta-alumina. The catalyst component may be added in a variety of ways well known in the art, either before or after the drying stage, but not before the alumina is precipitated as the beta-trihydrate. The product may be used as a support for a variety of catalysts, such as molybdenum, nickel, tungsten and chromium oxides, and also palladium and platinum, which last may be added in the form of soluble platinum-ammonia complexes. Specification 754,552 is referred to.
