Abstract
827,364. Metal-cutting machine details. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Dec. 31, 1956 [Oct. 5, 1955], No. 28431/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIII] In a method of machining titanium and alloys thereof, the metal is machined in an inert or inhibiting atmosphere to prevent access of undesirable gases, e.g. air, which would cause hardening under the action of heat produced by cutting. The cutting - area may be " blanketed " by spraying argon-gas &c. with or without solutions of sodium-nitrite, sodiumsilicate and sodium-chloride or a mixture of these solutions. Further inhibitors, such as sulphur-chlorinated oil with additives, and nitroteamine solutions, may be used with the gas. Cooling of the tool may be by carbondioxide, applied so that it does not contact the workpiece, or by pre-cooling the " blanketing" atmosphere. In a modification, the cutting- area is enclosed in a box to which the inhibiting- gas is supplied. The method may be applied to the turning, milling and sawing of titanium.
