Abstract

827,286. Automatic exchange systems. BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH Ltd. Oct. 11, 1956 [Oct. 14, 1955], No. 29397/55. Class 40 (4). Metering is performed on a magnetic drum, one storage area of which is reserved for test purposes. Periodically pulses from a source P, Fig. 4, are registered in the test area and simultaneously on an electromagnetic counter EC. The entries in the test area and the counter EC are compared at CS and any discrepancy brings up an alarm A. The counter comprises two uniselectors, Fig. 1, wired so that they open or close gates 1-19 so as to produce a series of pulses TX1-TX10 on leads SUM and SUM representing in binary form the number of pulses provided by the source P. After each step of the counter a time pulse TPM, Fig. 2, occurs. A further time pulse TZN is supplied for each register which is to be tested. The number represented by the pulses on leads SUM, SUM is compared with the number signalled by the register to leads SLM, SLM and any discrepancy sets up electronic relay MAA to reverse relay CR and operate ate an alarm and connect up stand-by equipment. When the fault has been rectified key KAA may be operated to restore MAA and CR. Test register full. When 1 is detected in area TXI relay MBA, Fig. 3, is operated, but is restored if 0 is detected in any subsequent area. If the test register is full MBA remains operated until pulse TZN occurs after the whole register has been scanned. MBA then applies potential to terminal RF to initiate transfer of the information to a punched tape. The pulses from source P may be at 2-minute intervals or may be slightly less so as to fill the register every 24 hours. The magnetic drum may be of the type described in Specification 723,148.
