Abstract
826,810. Directional couplers; microwave filters. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Dec. 24, 1957 [Dec. 31, 1956], No. 40101/57. Class 40 (8). A directional coupler comprises two hollow waveguides arranged side by side and having a common wall with coupling apertures therein, each aperture being associated with a resonant obstacle which is dimensioned to be antiresonant at a frequency fA outside a band of frequencies to be transferred from one of the guides to the other, and so coupled to the field that the transmission loss through the aperture is lowered over the said band. Waveguides 4 and 5 are coupled by slots 7 in the common wall 6 and the slots are spaced apart by an odd integral number of quarter-wavelengths at a frequency inside said band and rods 9, each having a length equal to an integral number of quarter-wavelengths at fA and being bent at a right-angle adjacent one end, are attached at said end alternately to the top or bottom of the slots and extend along the length thereof. The diameter of the rods 9 and their point of connection to the slots are selected to give a band of suitable width with a low transmission loss, Fig. 4 Graph 13 (not shown). The rods may be an integral number of half-wavelengths long at fA, in which case the rods are attached at both ends to the slots. In the embodiment of Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the coupling apertures are circular and contain a conductive ring 18 inside a dielectric ring 17.
