Abstract

Animal or vegetable tissues to be preserved by drying are first deep-frozen at -35 DEG C. to - 70 DEG C., then brought rapidly to a temperature higher by at least 25 DEG C. and immediately dried. Drying is preferably effected at between - 15 DEG C. and + 5 DEG C. under a pressure of 0.1 to 2 mm. Hg.; after at least one quarter of the moisture originally present has been removed, drying may be completed at a temperature below + 5 DEG C. different from that attained by the sudden rise of temperature. According to an example, a thin layer of calf foetal liver was cooled to - 35 DEG C. and after a rapid increase in temperature, was dried in an inert atmosphere at - 5 DEG C.; after about one third of the water had been removed the temperature was lowered to - 35 DEG C. and then gradually raised to 0 DEG C.
