826,282. Tilting furnaces. BIRLEC Ltd. May 23, 1958 [May 23, 1957], No. 16337/57. Class 51 (2). In a tilting furnace 1 mounted in a framework 2 below a floor opening 3 and having a plate 7 attached to the furnace and flush with the floor 4, a guard comprising a fixed unit 8 and a free unit 9 each of sector shape elevation and U- shape in plan embraces the furnace, so that when the latter is raised the floor opening is protected. Removable transparent or mesh plates cover openings 10 and 11 in the sheet metal sides and base of each guard unit. The furnace is tiled about an axis 5 and rests on framework 6, and the unit 8, which is fixed to the furnace below plate 7 telescopes within the free unit 9. One or more stops 13 limit the upward movement of the free unit by contacting a girder 14. Wire ropes 17 attached to brackets 19 below the floor 4 pass over pulleys 16 on the free unit to brackets 18 on the internal surface of the fixed unit base. As the furnace and fixed unit are tilted the free unit also tilts but at a slower speed due to the arrangement of the ropes and pulleys. This arrangement also prevents fouling of current-conducting strips 21 extending between the furnace and the support 20.
