Abstract
Fibre- or film-forming polyesters having an improved affinity for basic dyes contain as a minor proportion of their structural units organic radicals having at least one sulphonate group in the form of a metal salt. They are made by reacting a dicarboxylic acid and an aliphatic glycol or a diester of an aromatic diol in the presence of at least 0.5 mol. per cent based on the total of the acid components of a compound containing at least one ester-forming functional group and at least one sulphonate group in the form of a metallic salt. The compounds may be metallic salts of sulphomonocarboxylic esters, sulphodicarboxylic esters, monohydric and dihydric alcohols containing at least one sulphonic acid group, or monohydric alcohols containing one carboxylic acid group and one sulphonic acid group. Preferably such compounds have the formula <FORM:0826248/IV (a)/1> wherein <FORM:0826248/IV (a)/2> is the metallic sulphonate salt of a divalent arylene radical, M is the atomic equivalent of a metallic element, R is <FORM:0826248/IV (a)/3> and n and m are numbers and n being greater than 1, and R1 being a member of the same class as R or hydrogen. Polyesterification may be effected in the presence of ester-interchange catalysts (e.g. salts, such as the acetates, of calcium, manganese or lanthanum), polymerization catalysts (e.g. antimony oxide), colour inhibitors (e.g. alkyl or aryl phosphate esters) or delusterants (e.g. titanium dioxide or barium carbonate). The preferred polyesters to be modified are polyesters of diesters of terephthalic acid and polymethylene glycols which may if desired be further modified with other diesters (e.g.p.p1-bibenzoates) or other glycols (e.g. 1.4-bis [hydroxyethoxy] benzene). Examples describe the preparation of polyesters from dimethyl terephthalate, ethylene glycol and (1), (5), (6) and (7) potassium, calcium, lanthanum or lead salts of 3.5-di (carbomethoxy) benzenesulphonate or sodium 1.8-di (carbomethoxy) naphthalene - 3 - sulphonate; (2) potassium 2.5 - di (carbomethoxy) benzene sulphonate; (3) sodium p - carbomethoxybenzenesulphonate; (4) potassium 4.41 - di (carbomethoxy) biphenyl - 2 - sulphonate; (8) dipotassium 5 - carbomethoxybenzene - 1.3 - disulphonate. In Examples (9) and (10), a low polymer of ethylene glycol and potassium-di (carbomethoxy)-benzenesulphonate is added to a low polymer of ethylene glycol and dimethyl terephthalate and the mixture polycondensed. Other ester-forming sulphonate compounds mentioned are potassium p-hydroxyethoxybenzenesulphonate, potassium 2.5 - bis (hydroxyethoxy) benzene sulphonate and lithium-2 - carbo - beta - hydroxyethoxy - 5 - hydroxyethoxybenzenesulphonate.
