Abstract

In a process for the extraction of naphthalene from combustible gases, wherein the gas is scrubbed with a wash oil, and the enriched wash oil is regenerated by passing an inert gas, preferably the combustible gas itself, at an elevated temperature through the oil, the stripping gas and the enriched wash oil, before contact with each other, are heated to a temperature in the range of 125 DEG to 150 DEG C., whereby the naphthalene is subsequently stripped out of the oil. Hot stripped wash oil is pumped from tank 1 through cooler 5 and conduit 8 into the top of gas-washer 9. Untreated gas is introduced into the lower part of the washer through conduit 10. The wash oil absorbs naphthalene and other hydrocarbons boiling above 140 DEG C. from the gas. The treated gas leaves the washer through conduit 11; and the enriched wash oil flows out through conduit 12 into tank 13. This enriched wash <PICT:0826225/III/1> oil is pumped via conduits 15 and 16 to heater 17, where it is raised to a temperature of 125-130 DEG C. The hot oil now enters the top of column 21 in which it flows downwards against a countercurrent of hot gas, which enters the base of the column via conduit 22. The stripped wash oil flows out of the base of the column into tank 1. The naphthaleneladen gas, which flows out of the top of the column, is passed to cooler 25 where it is cooled to slightly above atmospheric temperature and a large proportion of the high-boiling hydrocarbon content of the gas is condensed. The condensate is withdrawn via conduit 28. The gas, which still contains naphthalene, leaves the cooler via conduit 29 and enters the base of gas-washer 30. Cool wash-oil, from tank 13, is introduced into the top of washer 30 through conduit 31; and it absorbs the naphthalene from the gas. The wash oil leaves washer 30 via conduit 33, and flows into tank 1. The washed gas leaves the top of washer 30, and is pumped via conduit 34 to heater 36 and thence to column 21. Another embodiment of the invention is described wherein the used gas leaving the top of the column is returned to a point in the gas production mains, instead of being passed to cooler 25 and gas-washer 30.
