Abstract

826,002. Packaging-machines. PICKERING, D. F. [RADO, L., Representative of]. Nov. 15, 1955 [Nov. 16, 1954], No. 33174/54. Class 94(1). In a machine for forming containers filled with liquid or paste, webs 3 and 4 of thermoplastic material are fed from supply rolls 1 and 2 over guide rollers and between reciprocable pressing and welding tools 18 and 19 each comprising resiliently-mounted edge-welding members 6 or 7, Fig. 2, and a lower die portion 9 or 10 formed with cavities 11 or 12 defining the shape of the container to be formed. The webs are first brought between the upper parts 20 and 21 of the tools and the latter moved towards one another so that the edges of the webs are clamped between the members 6 and 7. A high frequency voltage is then applied to the tools so that the edges and lower ends of the webs are united to form a primary container which is then partially filled with liquid or paste introduced through a tube 13. The tools are then withdrawn, the filled portion of the primary container is moved downwardly and located between the portions 9 and 10 of the tools, and the latter are then brought together so that the liquid or paste is displaced by the parts of the dies surrounding the cavities and forced into the cavities, thus shaping the containers.. High frequency voltage is then applied to the tools to unite the contacting walls of the containers surrounding the cavities. At the same time, the next primary container to be filled is formed by the members 6, 7. The completed containers are engaged by intermittently-driven rollers 16, 17 which subsequently operate to draw further lengths of the webs from the rolls 1 and 2, the various operations being repeated automatically. A spring- loaded bar 10a mounted in the tool 19 cooperates with a projection on the tool 18 to seal the primary container transversely above the dies, thus preventing upward movement of the liquid or paste when the dies are brought together. This bar may be a high-frequency electrode.
