Abstract

In film-making apparatus of the type comprising an annular die through which heated thermoplastic organic material is extruded to form a tubular air-inflated film and a pair of coacting driven rolls through the nip of which <PICT:0825897/IV (a)/1> the tubular film is passed and thereby flattened, the distance between the face of the annular die and the axis of the rolls is at least and preferably more than five times the width of the flattened film, the rolls are of hard material, the periphery of one or of each of the rolls is sheathed with resilient material, and the sheathed rolls are of an equal diameter which is greater than the width of the flattened film. As shown, the resilient sheath of each roll 3, 4 is built up of two separate layers, namely an inner coating 5a and 6a respectively of continuous homogeneous natural or synthetic rubber free from voids and an outer coating 5b and 6b respectively of aerated or foamed polythene. The nip S between the cores of the rolls is made so narrow that the sheaths become powerfully compressed and reduced to less than half their original thickness. At the same time, the easily-compressible outer coatings 5b, 6b transmit the resulting deformation pressure to the relatively incompressible inner coatings 5a, 6a, which yield to this pressure sideways in the direction of the double arrow P and thereby draw the flattened tubular film 2 tight in the direction of its width. By this combined action, the film is laid completely flat free from wrinkles and folds.
