Abstract

A water-soluble cationic resin with tanning properties is obtained by condensing (a) a water-soluble salt of an amine containing a lipophilic residue with (b) cyanamide or one of its derivatives and (c) an oxo-compound. (a) is preferably a primary, aliphatic, cyclo-aliphatic, aliphatic - aromatic, aliphatic - cycloaliphatic amine salt whose lipophilic residue contains more than 6 and preferably 12-22 carbon atoms; (b) may be cyanamide, dicyandiamidine, guanidine, melamine, urea or preferably dicyandiamide; (c) may be formaldehyde or a substance yielding formaldehyde. A molar ratio of dicyandiamide to formaldehyde of 1 : 3 to 1 : 8 preferably 1 : 4 to 1 : 5 is suitably employed, a part of the dicyandiamide, suitably 0.1-0.7 mol., being replaced by the equimolecular amount of amine salt. In examples: (1) a resin solution is prepared by heating dicyandiamide, coconut oil amine hydrochloride and formalin in molar ratio 0.6: 0.4: 5.0; and (2) in molar ratio 0.5: 0.5: 4.0; in (3) coconut oil amine hydrochloride is reacted with formalin and cyanamide.
