Abstract

825,426. Tubular heat exchangers. HAMILL, T. M. Sept. 15, 1956, No. 28240/56. Class 64(3) A vapour to liquid heat exchanger comprises a shell 2 containing parallel tube banks 1 connected in series by header compartments 11 in which deflector means are provided for guiding a fluid (e.g. pineapple juice) from one bank of tubes to the next, each header compartment being open. only to the ends of the tubes of two adjoining tube banks and having an arcuately concave return wall 16 confronting the ends of said tubes. In the form shown the shell 2 is of rectangular cross-section and is stregthened e.g. by angle irons 3 to resist internal pressure: Each tube bank comprises equally spaced parallel tubes 4 extending between tube plates 5 to each of which is secured a header box, one of the tube plates being connected to the shell through an expansion joint 6. Each header box comprises a door 9 hinged to the associated tube plate and divided into compartments each straddling an adjacent pair of tube banks, the compartments 11 in the two headers being relatively-staggered so that the fluid is caused to flow through successive tube banks in series. One of the headers may be provided with inlet and outlet manifolds 17, 18 (Fig. 1) for comnection to suitable piping or to a similar heat exchanger where two or more are grouped together. Openings 19 (normally plugged) are provided in the headers for thermometers when required. Vapour, such as steam; enters the shell 2 through an inlet 20 and is directed by longitudinal baffles 21 on the tubes in a plurality of passes of decreasing cross-sectional area. At the same time, in each pass, the vapour is directed in a sinuous path across the tubes by transverse baffles 27 (Fig. 8) which serve also as intermediate tube supports. The baffles 21 and the shell 2 of the heat exchanger may be slightly inclined to cause the steam condensate to drain into a sump 30 from which it is removed through an outlet 32. Uncondensed vapour is discharged from the sump 30 through pipes 31.
