Abstract
825,382. Tubular glass containers. JOHNSEN & JORGENSEN FLINT GLASS Ltd. Jan. 15, 1958 [May 16, 1957], No. 15598/57. Class 56. A method of making glass containers such as ampoules from glass tubing comprises feeding lengths of glass tubing successively into a machine and forming a bottom in each length before any containers are made therefrom. The mechanism specified comprises an arm 1 on a pivot 2, at a position outside the pitch circle upon which the chucks of a conventional machine for making glass containers of the kind referred to revolve, carrying a slidable member 4. Contact of rollers 6 with the rotating chucks each of which holds a vertical piece of glass tubing produces sliding of member 4 which is transmitted to roller 44 which engages with cam surface 45 and imparts thereby a downward movement to the jaw holder 14 along with the sliding movement which is also transmitted to jaw holder 14. These movements of jaw holder 14 through a system of gears and tappet rods result in jaws 20 being raised and brought to bear on the glass tubing below section heated by gas burner 7. Further movement of the chucks results in a small portion of glass tubing being removed from the lower end in such a way that a bottom is formed in the tube as the small portion is drawn away.
