Abstract

825,289. Copy-milling. STARRFRAESMASCHINEN A.G. April 12, 1956 [April 15, 1955], No. 11201/56. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIX] The reciprocating spindle-head 8 of a milling- machine attached to a piston 10 is displaced by the latter along a workpiece, not shown, until a gauging-pin 6 in the head 8 abuts one of two contact wires 40, 50, which form a template and have a contour corresponding to that of the finished work, and causes energization of one or other solenoid 2, 3 which moves a valve 5 controlling the admission and exhaust of pressure medium to and from the cylinder 11 of piston 10. Upon contacting the other wire 40 or 50, the opposite solenoid 2 or 3 is energized to reverse the valve 5 and direction-oftravel of the piston 10. This cycle will continue until the machining of the work is complete. Adjustable-stops 17, 18 and a rod 19, slidably guided by a stationary member on the machine-frame, limit the straight-line travel of head 8 by cam-operation of the switch members 22a, 22b of a switch 22, which members also control the solenoids 2, 3 to effect reversal of the piston 10, should the head 8 impinge upon either stop and displace the rod 19; the latter is returned to its original position by a pair of spring-loaded levers 20. Should either of the switch-members 22a, 22b fail, upon the head 8 contacting stop 17 or 18, the switch 22 is displaced with its slide 23 to actuate a safetyswitch 24 and stop the machine. Two pushbuttons 25 enable the movement of the head 8 to be reversed at will. In a modification, the contact wires have a common junction with the safety switch 24, and the solenoids are actuated through a reversing relay. The contact wires may be replaced by electrically-conductive templates.
