Abstract
A sodium perborate trihydrate of formula Na[BO2.H2O2].2H2O is crystallized at 12-86 DEG C. from an aqueous solution of sodium perborate or components forming sodium perborate, in the presence of a sodium salt of hydrochloric, sulphuric or nitric acid. The crystallization may be performed in the presence of seeds, e.g. of the solid trihydrate or of sodium percarbonate; in the presence of solid sodium perborate tetrahydrate (Na[BO2.H2O2].3H2O) (which continuously dissolves and reprecipitates as trihydrate); or in the presence of stabilizers such as magnesium silicate, stannic oxide and tetrasodium ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid. Suitable components for the production of sodium perborate in solution are sodium metaborate and hydrogen peroxide or sodium peroxide, hydrogen chloride and borax. If desired, after removal of the trihydrate crystals, the mother liquor may be suitably supplemented and reused for the precipitation of a further batch of the crystalline product.
