824,810. Valves. COMPAGNIA ITALIANA WESTINGHOUSE FRENI E SEGNALI. July 16, 1957 [July 20, 1956], No. 22475/57. Class 135. A stem 8 with a hand wheel 9 is provided with a split thrust-bearing 12 and one or more helical projections 19 which register with one or more helical grooves 18 in the rod 17 of a piston 15 that is prevented from rotating by a pin 25; the stem ends with a multiple trapezoidal thread 29 which screws into a head 30 connected to a valve closure 32 via a split thrust-bearing 34 and a stem 31, the closure being in an hydraulic system 46, 47. Seals 16, 22, 24 and 28 are associated with the piston 15, rod 17 and stem 8, respectively, whilst further seals 27 coact with the pin 25; a stuffing-box comprising a packing gland 39 and gaskets 40 seals the stem 31, an opening 41 in the valve casing facilitating access to the stuffing-box. Counter-clockwise rotation of the hand wheel 9 causes the head 30 to screw on to the thread 29 and lift the closure 32 from its seat since the head 30 is prevented from rotating by a screw 36, and the stem 8 cannot undergo axial displacement due to the bearing 12; during rotation of the stem 8 the piston 15 is elevated because of the interaction of the projections 19 and grooves 18. Clockwise rotation of the hand wheel seats the closure 32 and restores the piston 15 to the position shown. The valve may be opened by supplying compressed air underneath the piston 15 and opening the space above the piston to atmosphere, the axial displacement of the piston 15 causing rotation of the stem 8 through the projections 19 and grooves 18; the valve is closed by reversing the pressure and atmospheric connections. The pitch of threads 29 may be chosen to ensure that the valve cannot be opened by pressure in the hydraulic system should the air supply fail when the valve is in the closed position. In a modification, the ends of the cylinder housing the piston 15 are interconnected by tie-rods whilst the stem 8 is keyed to a threaded member engaging a fixed threaded bush, the threaded member being integral with the stem 31.
